About Shea Butter:
Shea Butter is from the fruit of the Karite tree grown in Africa. There are two general types of shea butter- unrefined organic and refined. The unrefined is extracted without the use of hexane, chemical pesticides, or preservatives. Because of this, the unrefined shea butter still has the majority of its healing properties. Refined shea butter is extracted with the use of chemicals and has been bleached to give it a uniform color and to remove the scent. After the refining, refined shea butter has very little, if any, of it’s healing properties and is basically dead. Unrefined shea butter is a golden, yellow color and a very distinctive smell. (The smell does go away when applied to the skin.)
Many cosmetic manufacturers use refined shea butter to avoid the shea scent. It is also cheaper to buy the refined shea butter as it is of lower quality. Don’t be fooled by marketing techniques of companies including shea in their products- it is usually highly refined and only incorporated at a very, very low percentage.
Apply to any part of the body that is not in its best condition. It is very concentrated and only a small amount is needed. Can be used on face, but avoid getting into mouth. It will feel a little oily at first. As soon as the Shea Souffle is absorbed into the skin, the oily feeling will go away. If it remains oily, you are using too much.
